My project started out being replacing my clutch, throwout bearing, flywheel and pilot bearing on my 1969 Cougar XR7 convertible. When I started this project, it was noticed that my main case on my 4 speed toploader had a broken off "ear" where the drivers top bolt went. So there were only 3 bolts holding in my tranny. Also, there was a good bit of oil that leaked out when the transmissions lower bolts were loosened to remove it. Not good. Once the transmission was on the ground it was visible that there are two plug holes on the front face of the trans and one of them had a dime in it for a plug. This had to go.
I ordered an almost new 4 speed transmission from Dan Williams in NC. Since I was now putting in a new trans I thought I would also put in a Hurst shifter and the linkage/install kit as well.
On this install date, 12/18/11, we got the trans in, with the Hurst shifter and linkages and then there was a grinding noise when the car is running, not in gear and the clutch not depressed. When the clutch is depressed the noise stops. We ran out of time that day and will be tackling it this Sunday. The trans needs to come out again, but wer are going to insert some U shaped washers between the trans and the block to see if the noise stops. If so, which I hope it does, the trans will be pulled out again, and the main bearing case over the input shaft will be removed and a 1/4" will be ground off to give some clearance from that case and the clutch disc.
So that is my winter project thus far.
